W.G. Cooper Obituary

W. G. Cooper, Jr., 87, of Clark County, Indiana, died peacefully while surrounded by family, on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at The Waters of Scottsburg.

W. G. was born in Bloomington, Kentucky, on July 5, 1936, to Will Green Cooper, Sr., and Lucy Owens Cooper.  He spent his early childhood in Salyersville, Kentucky, until the family moved to Clark County, Indiana.  Charlestown was home for most of his life, but for the last 28 years, he called North New Market Road, Marysville, Indiana, home.

W. G. attended the House of Refuge Church in Nabb. W. G. retired from General Electric after 38 years.  In his retirement, he enjoyed living and fishing at Lake Patoka for several years.  Later he spent many of his winters at Lake Okeechobee, Florida.  He enjoyed entertaining his family and friends by cooking up the fish he brought back home to Indiana.

In his younger days, W. G. enjoyed serving as President of the Charlestown Little League and was one of the original organizers of the Charlestown Youth Football League.  He enjoyed umpiring baseball games and refereeing basketball games for many of the schools in Clark County and other surrounding counties.

He was a loyal IU and Cincinnati Reds fan.  He enjoyed raising a garden and was the best at making cornbread, soup beans, and wilted lettuce salad.  W. G. also enjoyed his time serving as a Charlestown City Councilman in the 1970s, as well as serving on numerous boards for the City.  He was the first President of the North Clark Democrat Club.  He was an elected delegate to the Democratic State Convention for some eight years in a row along with his best friend, Kenneth "Monk" Roberts.

W. G. was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Charles Cooper, Owens Cooper, and Forest Cooper, Sr.; his sister, Sarah Rose Hall, and brother-in-law, Clay Hall; his sister-in-law, Virginia Cooper; and his sons-in-law, Terrell Ross and Johnny Eickholtz.

W. G. is survived by his children: Nancy C. Ross, Betty J. Montgomery, Doug Cooper, Sr., and Bill Cooper, Sr. (Danielle); his grandchildren: Scott Frazier (Stefanie), Lisa Gardner (Charles), Doug Cooper, Jr., Bill Cooper, Jr., Dustin Cooper, and Brittany Grant (Adam); his great-grandchildren: Dakota Frazier, Morgan Frazier, Jaydon Gardner, Annabelle Gardner, Bentley Cooper, Mason Grant, Madelyn Grant, and Delilah Manning; his sisters: Janet Becker (John), Phyllis Pack (Jim), and Patty Keloge (Greg); his sisters-in-law: Verna Jean McDaniel and Norma Cooper; his many nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Janice Faith.  W. G. is also survived by his faithful canine companion, Buddy.

W.G.'s family is thankful for the care and kindness shown to him by the staff of The Waters of Scottsburg during the last five months of his life, and by Southern Care Hospice during the last six days of his life.
