Paul A Loy

Paul Arthur Loy, 77, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2022, after several complications from necrotizing pancreatitis. He was surrounded by his loving family, one of whom spontaneously found and played a recording of the CIC quartet singing "Oh, What A Savior," in which Paul could be heard so clearly singing solo, as he did many times over the years, the lyrics of the last verse: “Death’s chilly waters, I’ll soon be crossing, His hand will lead me safe o’er, I’ll join the chorus in that bright city, and sing up there forevermore.  O what a Savior, O hallelujah!”

 Paul was born on January 8, 1945, to Melvin Randolph Loy (Fairborn, Ohio) and Margaret Fay Miller (Salina, Kansas) in Troy, Ohio, USA (Miami County).  After Paul graduated from Scottsburg High School (Indiana, 1963), he stated he went on to earn a "Degree of Hard Knocks." 

 Paul was baptized by his father, Pastor Melvin R. Loy at Weir's Lake, Scottsburg, Indiana on June 3, 1962.

 Paul married Polly May Stiegman on June 22, 1968.  Paul and Polly went on to have four children, Shawn, Abby, Todd, and Rachel.  When dear family friend Marcella ("Marcye") Cain's grandmother could no longer continue to be her guardian, they accepted that responsibility and she has been part of the family ever since.

Paul served as a Sunday school teacher, junior church leader, bus minister, church bus/van driver, and for many years at Charlestown Independent Church (CIC), first as a deacon on the deacon board that built the current church building at 9575 SR 62, Charlestown, Indiana, then later as an elder for many years.  A responsibility he had was to lead prayer for the congregation, which he last did on Sunday, May 8, 2022.  He had the "spiritual Gift of Helps."  He helped wherever it was needed.  One of his favorite responsibilities was to oversee the annual CIC Missions budget which gives to several ministries, churches and missions locally and all over the world.  He enjoyed connecting church members to missions and traveling to several places to lead serving teams from the church both in the US and internationally. 

Paul enjoyed singing gospel music, hymns, and worship music, first with his parents and siblings, and later in various groups and choirs at church and, occasionally, he stepped in to lead the singing at church services. 

Like his father and mother, he loved reading thru the Bible, and did so many times.  Some CIC members may still recall many years ago when an anonymous donor gave all church members "The NKJV Daily Bible: Read the Entire Bible in One Year."  Guess who the anonymous donor was?  He recently told his daughter of all the times of reading thru the Bible, this year has been the richest, and that he was still gaining deeper insights from what he was reading.

Paul was a hard worker and a provider for his family.  He worked several jobs before eventually becoming an engineer designing and building automated equipment for many customers for many years at Precision Automation, Clarksville, IN, and later, as a co-owner of LOMA Automation, Louisville, KY, retiring in 2012.

Paul authored a book of stories from his childhood, The Papa Chronicles. Some of his greatest joys were spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, holding babies, hosting and cooking Sunday dinners for his family (he enjoyed cooking, and since his retirement, he had become quite a chef), watching the Kentucky Wildcats, the NCAA basketball tournament, NASCAR, football (Colts), baseball (Reds), traveling, and watching and befriending squirrels and birds, by spreading seeds and food scraps outside the back windows of his house.

There is not space enough to name all the lives he has touched nor words to express the hole he will leave.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Phillip and a stillborn great-grandson, David Isaac. He is survived by his sisters Donna Weir, Virginia Robertson,  Angela Miller, and his brother David (Sherry) Loy; his wife Polly; his children: Shawn (April) Loy, Abigail (Troy) Kleehamer, Todd Loy (fiancée Amanda Jackson), Rachel Loy, Marcye (Travis) Griffith;  his grandchildren: Kayla Joseph (Jake) Stice, Dustin Joseph, Caleb Griffith, Emily Loy (Conner) Burgess, Ravin Loy, Shayna Loy,  Hope Griffith (Aaron) Ulrich, Charli Loy, Kenna Loy, Corrie Loy, Lila Kleehamer, and as a family we include in this listing our more recent, and beloved, additions of Amanda's children: Luke Jackson and Lainey Jackson;  his great-grandchildren: Kaisaac Stice, Lochlan Stice, Abigail Mills, Berkleigh Stice, and Grayson Paul Burgess.  Paul requested that all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren are to be Honorary Pallbearers.  

Paul is also survived by his aunt Ruth, uncle Johnny, and many "-in-laws" and cousins, and nieces and nephews.  Paul loved to go to family reunions.

Visitation will be at Grayson Funeral Home, Charlestown IN 47111 Tuesday 4-8 pm. Services will be held at Charlestown Independent Church at 1:00 pm Wednesday with visitation beginning at 10:00 am.

 In lieu of flowers, Paul requested that donations be made to Charlestown Independent Church and designated for:  Good Samaritan Children's Home in Malawi, Africa, Victory World Outreach, 5040 Penn Road, Iron Station, NC 28080
