Donald Archie Kahl

April 16, 1941 ~ October 22, 2017 (age 76) 76 Years Old


Donald Archie Kahl, 76 of Otisco, Indiana passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2017 in Sellersburg.

He was born on April16, 1941 in Otisco to the late George Kahl and Mary Alliene Moore. Donnie, as he was referred to by most, was a 1960 graduate of New Washington High School. During his high school years he excelled in basketball, track, and cross country. He held the half mile and mile records in track and two mile record in cross country for Clark County. He held the half mile record in track for over 40 years. In basketball he held the highest scoring average in Clark County during both his junior and senior year. Donnie went to Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado on a basketball scholarship. He was later inducted into the Colorado Basketball Hall of Fame. Donnie received his Master’s Degree at Indiana University Southeast. He pursued a teaching career and through the years taught at Austin, Charlestown, and Silver Creek High Schools. At these schools he was an assistant basketball, track, and cross country coach. Donnie later became a hypnotherapist giving stop smoking and weight loss seminars in 48 states. He is preceded in death by his parents, his two sisters, Myrtle (Marge) McMillen, and Doris Ann Carlisle, and brother, Charles Kahl.

Donnie leaves behind his brothers, Melvin Harmon (Betty) of Louisville, KY, George Kahl of Otisco, IN, and Maurice Kahl (Kay) of Jeffersonville, IN.  Uncle Donnie as he was called by his surviving nieces and nephews had a special place in each of their hearts and will be greatly missed.

Donnie will be remembered for his caring nature, love of “get togethers”, lively debates, storytelling, card tricks, and more importantly for the love and care he gave his mother (Granny) for 37 years.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 12pm to 2pm at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church where he was a member (Old State Road 3 in Otisco) with his celebration of life service taking place at 2pm.

Cremation was chosen following Donnie’s wishes. He will be laid to rest in the Emmanuel Church Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Maple Manor Christian Home who showed compassion, care, and concern for Donnie and the family. A special “thank you” to Don his friend at Maple Manor who spent many hours watching “cowboys”, and debating politics with him.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Donor’s favorite charity.
